Square A1

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Hello and welcome to A1 Excel! In this post I will be starting at "Square A1" by going over the basics of how to navigate Excel formulas. This topic may sound basic but it is important for setting the foundation of any Excel skillset.

Let's get started with basic navigation!

Below is the formulas menu which highlights various details on formulas, calculations, and more:

If you're new to learning Excel I recommend playing around with this menu to learn about various formulas and functions that may be useful for your development. For example, if I wanted to learn more about a Logical formula like IF I would select the Logical icon and follow the steps below:

  1. Select Logical:

2. Select IF from the drop down menu and you will see a pop-up box of the formula parameters with the details needed to satisfy the function:

3. Fill out the parameters as needed and select OK. This example is just for fun as you'll see below:

4. To summarize what this formula is doing I put in a logical statement that says, "If cell B1 is blank (that is the "" meaning blank), then the result if this is true should say "This cell is blank" but if the statement were to be false/incorrect then the result should say "Contains data" in cell A1."

This is the result from the formula as well as how the formula appears in the classic formula bar:

This is just an example of one of the many formulas you can build out from the menu with the parameter prompts. As you get more comfortable with Excel you will learn how to type in formulas directly in the cell to get your desired formula result faster. I hope you found this information helpful!
